Abstract

The central yard in Iranian architecture has the long history. However this introversion is known as an effect of cultural, religious, psychological and environmental factors or it is considered due to the access, but some of these reasons can be more highlighted than others, so the goal of this research is investigating the geometry''s qualitative role on the shape stability of mosques'' central yards. Geometry and math are same in various sciences and territories, but the way of perception and usage of them is different. Geometry in Iranian architecture is not limited to quantitative aspects only, but also it contains qualitative aspects too. The choice of tetrahedral geometry (square or rectangle) for mosques'' central yards in the Islamic era is the determinative of effective factor or factors, which even by the geometric transformation in central yards of other subjects like schools and caravansaries (after the Safavid era), they still keep their stability for mosques. In this research at first the basics were determined by using the library and documentary studies, then the assumptions were tested through analytical and descriptive methods and by using the historical evidences. The results show that the geometric qualitative aspects in shape stability (square or rectangle) of mosques'' central mosques are more dominant than other factors. So that a meaningful sequence can be considered among the Islamic view and the usage of tetrahedral shapes (square or rectangle) in mosques'' central yards and also the psychological aspect of space in square or rectangle plan can have an appropriate compatibility with the heart of prayer in order to provide a perfect background for the worship.
