Research Problem: The Seljuk era is one of the most important and brilliant periods in the history architecture of mosques. Inventions of this period in the mosques' skeleton have become one of the firmest and most common architectural designs of religious and public buildings, and in-between spaces art is the most substantial index of this skeleton. These spaces play a vital role in the spatial arrangement of mosques and their spatial qualities. A sense of security is one of the important spatial qualities affecting people's attendance and activity in the environment, so a space without such quality is not attractive to users.
Research Question: how is the in-between concept in the spaces of Jameh (grand) mosques of the Seljuk era affects the sense of security? How the spatial quality and components of the configuration of in-between spaces affect the sense of security in Seljuk's mosques?
Research Method: This is a descriptive-interpretive study with the mixed (qualitative-quantitative) method that is conducted using deductive reasoning. Statistical society of study comprises all mosques attributed to the Seljuk period based on the opinions of experts and researchers; in total, 14 mosques are available, and all of them are examined and studied.
The Most Important Results and Conclusion: the research results show that in addition to area, physical factors affect the mean depth of Seljuk mosques. The mosques with courtyards have similar patterns of mean depth. The pattern of mosques with a central courtyard, four porches, and a dome that is an innovative pattern creates the least mean depth, which in-between spaces are the main indicators of this pattern. Also, the results of this study indicate that factors affecting the depth of visual permeability through the central courtyard in mosques constructed during the Seljuk era include the ratio of the courtyard's area to the whole area of the mosque, arrangement pattern of spaces around the courtyard and the location and proportions of porches. The most important factors affecting the depth of visual permeability of entries include the arrangement of space of mosques, the location of entries, type and rate of their spatial hierarchies.
