Problem Statement: The evolution of housing patterns in Syria, particularly in the historic city of Aleppo, has been significantly impacted by socio-political crises in recent years, necessitating new living approaches. The absence of appropriate housing models that respond to contemporary requirements has created serious settlement challenges. Following more than a decade of war, Syrian citizens in general - and Aleppo residents in particular - have been caught in difficult economic circumstances, compelling them toward self-reliance through adopting simple techniques to secure basic living necessities. This situation has led residents, especially low-income groups, to adapt their domestic spaces to serve multiple functions. The core challenge currently facing the city is the mismatch between existing housing structures ("containers") and the emerging needs of citizens ("contents").
Research Question: What is the concept of indigenous self-reliant housing for low-income groups, and what are the characteristics and components of indigenous self-reliant housing for low-income groups in the Al-Hamdaniya district of Aleppo city?
Research Objectives: The main objective of this research is to develop a model for indigenous self-reliant housing in the Al-Hamdaniya district of Aleppo city, Syria, considering the current conditions and the needs of the local population. This research will demonstrate the feasibility of proposing an indigenous self-reliant housing model that can be incorporated into housing policies and residential complexes in Syria in general, and in Aleppo city in particular. This model offers a suitable solution to the housing crisis in Aleppo, which is closely linked to the challenges faced by the economically disadvantaged segments of society.
Research Methodology: To explore the dimensions of this model, a questionnaire was initially prepared to gather citizens' input about their living conditions and needs, ensuring public participation. Subsequently, existing residential patterns in the city were examined, and their key dimensions were inferred. The components of self-reliant housing were then proposed based on current lifestyles and housing quality. To practically determine self-reliant housing dimensions in Al-Hamdaniya district, a Delphi method questionnaire was developed and distributed to Aleppo experts in two stages: first, qualitative responses were analyzed using MAXQDA software; then a structured questionnaire containing practical suggestions was prepared and redistributed among experts to reach consensus, with final analysis conducted using SPSS.
Key Findings and Conclusions: The study defined indigenous self-reliant housing's main pillars: housing-work integration, independent comfort production, and community participation in construction. By intersecting spatial, structural and functional housing systems, the model's general characteristics were identified, with region-specific components derived through expert input. These results provide a comprehensive framework for construction organizations involved in the region's reconstruction, particularly addressing housing challenges for disadvantaged groups in Aleppo through an integrated approach combining traditional knowledge with contemporary needs assessment methodologies.
