Research Problem: Border spaces, often overlooked in urban design, serve as critical zones of interaction and transformation within residential environments. These spaces, which exist between private homes and public areas, or independently as undefined zones, hold significant potential for shaping habitation. They act as buffers, connectors, and sometimes as areas of contention, influencing how individuals and communities engage with their surroundings. By examining these boundary spaces, we can better understand the dynamics of urban living. These zones are not merely physical; they carry social and cultural implications, reflecting the ways people navigate privacy, security, and community. Designed or unplanned, these spaces contribute to the character of urban neighborhoods, offering opportunities for creativity, engagement, and redefinition of shared environments. Through careful study and thoughtful design interventions, border spaces can be transformed into vibrant areas that enhance the quality of life, fostering interaction while respecting individual and communal needs. Their potential lies in their adaptability and their ability to bridge the gap between the private and public realms.
Research Question: What role do the factors shaping the boundary spaces around the house play in the process of residence?
Research Method: The research was conducted within a naturalistic or interpretive paradigm using a qualitative method. Relevant concepts related to boundary spaces were extracted from library studies. Through careful observation and consultation with experts, factors related to the identified concepts were weighted using the ANP method among 8 academic experts in architecture and urban design.
The Most Important Results and Conclusion: The ratios between factors within each dimension and between dimensions were analyzed using pairwise matrices and a normalized supermatrix. The habitation process was modeled in three layers. In the first layer, the physical dimension predominates, the second layer, the social dimension, and the third layer, the semantic dimension, play a role in the habitation process. In the physical dimension of the first layer, the factor of separating private-semi-private spaces, in the social dimension of the second layer, interaction with neighbors, and in the semantic dimension of the third layer, the sense of belonging to the neighborhood are prioritized. In the influence of the factors of the three dimensions on each other, the interaction with neighbors has the greatest impact on the separation of private-semi-private spaces, and social participation has the greatest impact on semi-open spaces. The importance of the semantic dimension is greater than the social and physical dimensions in the habitation process. Consequently, based on the final model, the impact of the different dimensions on each other can be understood, and more appropriate decisions can be made with a holistic perspective.
