Research Problem: Despite the technological and formal advancements in contemporary architecture, the dominance of a purely spatial–functional perspective has led to the creation of environments that lack the capacity to evoke meaning, identity, and a sense of belonging. Interdisciplinary literature on spatial experience—from environmental psychology to human geography—emphasizes the role of cultural, cognitive, and emotional layers in shaping the quality of perception and lived experience. Nevertheless, within architectural discourse, there is still no coherent and operational framework for translating these layers into design decisions and measurable evaluative criteria. The consequence of this gap is the prevalence of generalized analyses and the continued production of “placeless” spaces that are neither memory-laden nor identity-forming. This study seeks to explain how the semantic and temporal dimensions of human experience mediate the formation of meaning in space, and through which pathways architecture can transform these dimensions into perceptual qualities and actionable design components. The present problem therefore addresses both an existing theoretical gap and the practical need to enhance the quality of spatial life in architectural environments.
Research Question: 1. How does narrative, as a cultural and cognitive structure, through its connection
with memory, time, and identity, contribute to shaping the lived experience of place? 2. Within the
framework of the reciprocal interaction between narrative and place, how do places become the stage for
narratives, and how are narratives represented as dynamic, multilayered, and mental places?
Research Method: This study aims to investigate the role of narrative as a mechanism of meaning-making in architectural space and to reconsider place as a dynamic, living, and multilayered field of experience. In this context, the research explores the interplay between narrative and place as a conceptual foundation for understanding meaningful architecture.
The Most Important Results and Conclusion: The findings of this study reveal that the relationship between narrative and place is not merely metaphorical but a reciprocal and meaning-generative interaction. Place itself can become a living narrative, while narrative can, in turn, be experienced as a mental and multilayered place. The examination of this interplay demonstrates that the duality of “place of narrative” and “narrative of place” provides a new conceptual framework for understanding meaningful architecture. Within this framework, architecture operates as the material language of narrative, enabling the creation of spaces that are not only functional and visual but also imbued with memory, identity, and experiential depth.
